Neighbors Helping Neighbors had added NHN 4 KIDS PROGRAM to our current mission of food insecurity in Amherst County, VA. NHN 4 KIDS, (formerly Amherst Cares), will be packing approximately 589 bags a week for students requesting weekend bags.
In a recent statement President Garry Friend stated, “We are honored to carry on a program that for 15 years focused on the welfare of the Amherst County children / students. It definitely fits into our current mission. Programs like this are not government-funded. To operate this program we need the financial, and food donations from our county residents. As in the case of our Food Warehouse, the people of Amherst County and surrounding areas always step up. You can view the specific food items we will be needing further down this page.
Volunteers will also be needed to help pack the bags and place them in bins for each school. As you have done before, join us in helping to continue this program for the kids.”
Weekend food bags provided by Neighbors Helping Neighbors will significantly improve students' well-being in Amherst County by addressing food insecurity and supporting both their physical and academic needs.
Key benefits include:
Improved Nutrition and Reduced Hunger:
The bags ensure students have access to nutritious meals over the weekend, filling the gap when school meals are unavailable. This reduces food insecurity and helps children return to school on Monday better nourished and ready to learn.
Better Academic Performance:
Studies show that students receiving weekend meals demonstrate higher reading and math scores, with the greatest improvements seen among the youngest and most academically vulnerable children.
Increased Attendance and Engagement:
Access to weekend food has been linked to improved school attendance, particularly on Fridays when the bags are distributed. Even modest increases in attendance can enhance academic progress and engagement over time.
Enhanced Focus and Mental Health:
Teachers report that students who benefit from weekend meal programs show better focus, improved classroom behavior, and reduced stress and anxiety, all of which contribute to a healthier learning environment.
Practical Support for Families:
The food items are chosen to be easy for children to prepare themselves, ensuring that even students without adult supervision can access meals when needed.
By providing these weekend bags, Neighbors Helping Neighbors is not only addressing hunger, but also supporting students’ educational success, emotional well-being, and overall development in Amherst County.
